Joe Biden finally diagnosed

Increasingly, many of Vice President Joe Biden's gaffes have something to do with him not knowing where he is along the space / time continuum or having a completely distorted view of history. In 2008, he said that FDR "got on television" during the Great Depression. In 2010 and again last month, he thought the 20th Century was in the future. He also explained how Rep. Paul Ryan was elected in 1988 but didn't take office until 1999.

This past week, he had three choices when making reference to when Michelle Obama gave her "elegant" speech; he got it wrong twice.

That leads us to what could be the correct psychological diagnosis. Generally, there are 15 common psychological defense mechanisms people employ to deal with uncomfortable realities. One of them is known as Dissociation, which is what I believe Mr. Biden may be afflicted with.

Dissociation is when a person loses track of time and/or person, and instead finds another representation of their self in order to continue in the moment. A person who dissociates often loses track of time or themselves and their usual thought processes and memories. People who have a history of any kind of childhood abuse often suffer from some form of dissociation. In extreme cases, dissociation can lead to a person believing they have multiple selves (“multiple personality disorder”). People who use dissociation often have a disconnected view of themselves in their world. Time and their own self-image may not flow continuously, as it does for most people. In this manner, a person who dissociates can “disconnect” from the real world for a time, and live in a different world that is not cluttered with thoughts, feelings or memories that are unbearable.

If Joe Biden wasn't a perpetual gaffe machine, this one might have slipped under the radar. While his comment in Wisconsin yesterday, that Paul Ryan was elected to Congress in 1988 and took office in 1999 is factually inaccurate, it might have been overlooked if not for Biden's penchant for not knowing where he is along the space / time continuum. In particular, his comment about America striving to be the world's leading auto manufacturer in the 20th century helps to contribute to this gaffe being a bit more relevant.

In 2008, Biden thought television was around during the Great Depression; last month (and two years ago) he thought we had just come out of the 19th century; and this weekend he revealed that Ryan had to wait more than a decade after being elected, to be sworn in. The term 'parallel universe' is often used in a figurative sense but when it comes to the synapses firing in Biden's mind, there may be reason to apply it to him in quite the literal sense.

At a campaign rally, Vice President Joe Biden urged people to dream big; he wants them to imagine a future in which the United States leads the world in being the 20th Century's largest automobile manufacturer.

Videos: Romney Communications Director and the 'Etch-a-Sketch' Gaffe

Uh, this can't be good for several reasons. One, there's nothing quite like the optics of an etch-a-sketch analogy. Two, Romney is already fighting a pretty imposing narrative that he's really a liberal. Three, the matter-of-fact nature in which Romney Communications Director Eric Ferhnstrom delivered his answer to a question about how Romney's conservative posture in the primaries could force him to run on a more conservative platform in the general than he otherwise would have to do.

In essence, Ferhnstrom said Romney can go back to being as liberal as is necessary after he secures the nomination.... with an "etch-a-sketch" metaphor.

Of course, if this gaffe has legs, look for an etch-a-sketch to accompany every campaign speech. In this case, Newt only waited a few hours to use one.

Video: Second McRino Gaffe in Same Day

Ok, so John McCain rips pork barrel spending and its perpetrators while referring to Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney as being among them. Small problem. McCain said it while campaigning for Romney, who was directly behind him.

Perhaps it's time for someone from Team Romney to politely ask for McCain to give back the microphone and ask him to take back his endorsement.

Video: Did Obama Say 'Jew' Instead of 'Janitor'?

While speaking at the annual Congressional Black Caucus (Racist organization), Barack Obama appeared to inadvertently say 'Jew' instead of janitor. Here is the relevant quote: 'If asking a billionaire to pay the same tax rate as a Jew.... as a janitor, makes me a warrior for the working class, I wear that with a badge of honor.' Gaffe aside, in light of the Solyndra scandal and the soaring unemployment rate among blacks during this administration, the words that came out of Obama's mouth were beyond hypocritical; it was projection on steroids. In 2009, he got his $787 Billion stimulus package and the people he claims to want to help got the shaft while his buddies at Solyndra squandered $535 Million.

Biden's Most Despicable Gaffe?

Vice president Joe Biden has said some extremely dumb things over the last several years. He instructed a man in a wheel-chair to stand up; he identified j-o-b-s as a three letter word; he somehow thought Franklin Delano Roosevelt was president during the 1929 stock market crash and then went on television, which didn't exist at the time, to talk to the American people; he infamously said that the United States needs to keep spending money in order to prevent bankruptcy. There are many, many more but on the night that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned to Congress, Biden officially made his worst gaffe... ever.

Escorted by her husband and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., Giffords exited the House floor slowly, giving a small wave to people as she left. She left the Capitol in an SUV shortly thereafter.

"It's been an emotional few hours," Wasserman Schultz told ABC News' Diane Sawyer on "World News." She said Giffords decided to make the trip to Washington because she "wanted to make sure that her district had a voice in this important vote."

Her appearance on the floor "melted even the hardest hearts," Wasserman Schultz told Sawyer.

"I've never seen more electricity on the floor erupt than when she triumpantly walked up those stairs," she said.

When Biden was asked about what he spoke with Giffords about, he joked, "She's now a member of the cracked head club like me."

The debt ceiling bill passed the House 269-161. The Senate will vote on the measure on Tuesday.

I think that one may even trump his referring to the Tea Party as a group of 'terrorists.'

TWO VIDEOS, TWO SIGNIFICANT GAFFES

In much the same way Jimmy Carter should thank Obama for seizing the mantle as worst American president ever, Obama should thank Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick and TIME Magazine editor Richard Stengel for besting his 'Joe the Plumber' moment about spreading the wealth around being 'good for everybody.' First up, Deval. WTKK radio in Boston aired a Q & A segment in which Patrick was asked for his thoughts about Glenn Beck's rally on the anniversary on MLK's 'I have a dream speech' on 8/28.

The quote? "It's a free country. I wish it weren't."

Now, move on over to Stengel who, on Morning Joe, was discussing the Israeli / Palestinian 'Peace' talks. When the topic of the Israeli wall came up, Stengel delivers this gem: "The sad truth" is that "the wall actually worked". Hmmm, so it's a bad thing that innocent Israeli civilians weren't blown to bits?

VIDEO: LATEST OBAMA GAFFE

There are times when even Barack Obama actually tells the truth. However, it usually involves a Freudian slip like this one. While in Ohio, he actually made reference to a woman who "upped her deductible to the minimum". Translation? Her previous deductible was below the minimum.

The man who tells the truth only when he misspeaks. Perhaps he tells the truth more often than we thought.
