Obama White House Showing its Colors

Refresher...
1.) President of Honduras Manuel Zelaya attempted to violate his country's constitution, which forbids him from being re-elected, by putting that little stickling point to a referendum when the only constitutionally acceptable way to do it would be through the amendment process, which obviously was something Zelaya wasn't comfortable with.

2.) When the military would not comply with Zelaya's orders, he fired General Romeo Vasquez Velasquez and moved full speed ahead with his unconstitutional plot.

3.) VERY TELLING AND KEY POINT HERE - On Sunday, June 28th, the scheduled date of the referendum, the military (acting on orders of the Honduran Supreme Court) pulled Zelaya from his home in the early morning hours. Why is this point key? Because it indicates that the Supreme Court, the Legislative Branch, AND the Military likely weren't eager to unseat the president because they waited until the last possible moment before Zelaya's unconstitutional referendum was to commence.

4.) Zelaya speaks at the U.N. claiming that he is the victim of a coup and plans to return to Honduras on Thursday, July 2nd despite the fact that the new government is threatening to arrest him if he does.

5.) Oh yeah, Zelaya is an ally of Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro

So where do things stand now?

The Hill is reporting that the Obama White House is apparently coming down on the side of Zelaya despite his unconstitutional attempt to retain power and his alliance with Chavez, who some say wants to rule Honduras by proxy which Zelaya would allow him to do.

Barack Obama: "We believe that the coup was not legal and that President Zelaya remains the democratically elected president there. It would be a terrible precedent if we start moving backward into the era in which we are seeing military coups as a means of political transition rather than democratic elections."

Hillary Clinton: (the ouster) "should be condemned by all."

How come no word from the Obama White House about how Zelaya attempted to unconstitutionally retain power? Isn't our Community Organizer in Chief a Constitutional Scholar? Surely he understands the reasons behind Zelaya's removal and can see it through that lens, right?

Even John Kerry has decided not to comment on the Constitutional Crisis in Honduras at this point.

You know who isn't holding his tongue? Hugo Chavez. He is urging Zelaya to meet with Obama and is quoted as saying such a meeting would "deliver a major blow" to the Honduras legislative and judicial branches as well as its military, all of whom appear to have worked together to defend their country's constitution.

Check out this statement from Rep. Connie Mack (R) of Florida.

"Manuel Zelaya trampled the Honduran Constitution by pushing for his illegal referendum to allow him to rule indefinitely, and by firing the top military official, General Romeo Vasquez Velasquez, when he refused to comply with Zelaya's unconstitutional orders,"

When we saw Obama grippin' and grinnin' with Hugo Chavez a few months ago, most chalked it up to simply a belief on Obama's part that if he engages socialist dictators, he might be able to get them to come around to see reason.

The crisis in Honduras has the potential to show Obama's true intentions either way. To this point, he appears to be siding with a president who attempted to circumvent his country's constitution with little or no regard for it. Disturbing is the fact that the Obama administration seems to be totally ignoring that aspect. By calling Zelaya's ouster a "coup" and saying it's "not legal" without acknowledging WHY Zelaya was removed, early indications are that he might side with a future Chavez puppet.

Developments this week will reveal much.

What will be interesting to see is if Obama along with the Organization of American States (OAS) strong arms the sitting government and demands that Zelaya be reinstated without addressing the issue of the referendum.

The truly diplomatic and most peaceful solution would probably be the reinstatement of Zelaya on the condition that he leave office when his term expires in January and that the notion of a referendum be dropped.

In any case, it's crises like the one in Honduras that will prevent Obama from hiding an important part of who he really is.
